  • Manufacturer: Dupont
  • Brand: Virkon

Specifically developed to offer improved broad spectrum control against virus families affecting man and animals, Virkon® Advanced has been designed to work on all surfaces including aluminium alloys, chrome and silicone, making it the broad spectrum virucidal disinfectant of choice.

Virkon® Advanced is a new formulation offering users ease of use and enhanced environmental and operator safety profiles, for complete biosecurity control of all types of poultry and animal housing, water delivery systems, farm equipment and vehicles.

Improved biocidal action

Virkon® Advanced is independently proven to have outstanding virucidal activity at low concentrations, using standard protocols applicable to farm disinfection, and against pathogens which have been selected for testing recognising their resilience to disinfection, or importance to livestock production.

Independent evaluation using the new European virucidal test method has shown Virkon® Advanced to be as effective as a glutaraldehyde/QAC solution 15 times more concentrated. More details available on request.

Corrosion protector

Virkon® Advanced contains protector corrosion inhibitors and generates a near neutral pH solution. This, together with the tailored level of actives, gives Virkon® Advanced solutions high compatibility with farm buildings, equipment and vehicles.

Comprehensive testing has demonstrated that, when used as instructed, Virkon® Advanced is compatible with common construction materials, including:

  •  Aluminium Alloy 2011 and 6262
  •  Chrome plate
  •  Nitrile Rubber
  •  Polyethylene (PE and PET)
  •  Polypropylene
  •  Polyurethane
  •  Polycarbonate

Mode of action

Virkon® Advanced achieves deactivation or destruction of the target organism through general oxidative disruption of key structures and compounds (e.g. proteins and lipids).

There is no evidence of bacterial disease causing organisms developing resistance towards Virkon® Advanced as opposed to other disinfectant types such as Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC’s).

Composition

Virkon® Advanced is a balanced, stable blend containing a peroxygen compound, corrosion inhibitors, surfactant and organic acids which, when dissolved, generates Peracetic acid.

Enhanced environmental profile

With increased importance on disposal and tighter controls on environmental discharges, careful selection of products is vital.

DuPont is committed to providing environmentally sustainable solutions. Virkon® Advanced has been formulated using actives that combine high performance with an enhanced environmental profile.

The key components of Virkon® Advanced are fully degradable to simple, naturally present substances, allowing for easier management of wastes arising from normal use i.e. disposal via municipal drains.

Environmental profile summary for Virkon® Advanced’s key components:

Component  Environmental Profile
Simple inorganic salt  Degrades to substances naturally present within the environment, including oxygen and water
Organic acid  Naturally present within the environment as an essential component of plant and animal cellular biochemistry
Organic activator  Readily biodegrades within the environment according to EU methodology
Active ingredient (generated in situ when diluted in water)  Degrades rapidly within the environment by a number of routes to form substances of no environmental concern, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and water

Operator safety profile

Virkon® Advanced is not a skin irritant or a sensitiser in either powdered form or at in-use dilutions1, requiring the operator to use only the minimal amount of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

1. In accordance EU Criteria on the classification and labelling of chemical preparations (1999/45/EC)

Easy to transport and store

Virkon® Advanced is not classified as a dangerous material under transport regulations, and may therefore be easily transported around the world by road, rail, sea and air making it ideal for both routine biosecurity and emergency disease response.

Virkon® Advanced does not require special storage conditions or need to be segregated from other chemical concentrates.

Solution preparation instructions

The following instructions will ensure a more consistent and accurate dilution rate than applying a disinfectant through a proportioner or chemical injector system. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) consisting of goggles, rubber gloves and coveralls should be worn whilst preparing Virkon® Advanced Solutions. See table for volume requirements to surface area.

To estimate the total surface are to be disinfected, including walls and ceilings, multiply the total floor area by a factor of 2.5.

The blue colour of Virkon® Advanced in-use solutions will fade after a couple of hours. This does not indicate the loss of efficacy.

Surface & equipment disinfection

Surface disinfection

The level of disease-causing organisms present after basic cleaning can remain high enough to offer a serious disease challenge to livestock. Using Virkon® Advanced, a disinfectant proven to be effective against viruses, bacteria, fungi and moulds is essential.
